Death valley -- european tourists near badwater junction

There were several busses and cars full of people from all over Europe. We were at one of the most desolate, forbidding places in all of the North American continent, and all I heard was French, Italian, and German. For some reason, there are always a lot of Europeans at Death Valley, especially Germans. As an American, it simply adds to the surreal feeling of the landscape. Why Death Valley in particular is as popular with Europeans as it is, remains a mystery.
