Not a bad amount of news this week. Things seem to have temporarily toned down so I can get some rest after the last few crazy issues. Everything seems to happen at once. A new electronic magazine will be coming out soon. Geert K. Marien sent to me the following: >The name is currently BITNET review. > >This will be an unofficial publication, but we will strive to have it >be as prefect and as accurate as possible. Copies will be available from >a few sources, including by direct subscription. > >Everyone from systems and administrative level to students are encouraged to >send news and articles to us. I will act, for the time being, as the person >to receive and distribute all incoming work to our editors, currently g >numbering 5. > >News and questions, as well as requests for subscriptions should be sent to me >at GEERT@BITNIC. Please note that this is in no way officially connected with >either the BITNET Network Support Center (BITNIC) or the City University of w >New York - University Computer Center (CUNY/UCC), nor any other organization. From out of Arpa... Oren Yulevitch has told me about a new Arpanet information server. It is NETLIB@ANL-MCS.ARPA. You may get information on how to use it by sending it the following comand via elecronic mail ONLY: Send info It is loaded with Fortran programs, subroutines and other neat stuff. For example, here is one of the index categories: EISPACK A collection of Fortran subroutines that compute the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of nine classes of matrices. The package can determine the eigensystems of complex general, complex Hermitian, real general, real symmetric, real symmetric band, real symmetric tridiagonal, special real tridiagonal, generalized real, and generalized real symmetric matrices. In addition, there are two routines which use the singular value decomposition to solve certain least squares problems. Developed by the NATS Project at Argonne National Laboratory. (d.p. refer to eispack, s.p. refer to seispack) By any other name... The conference machine CERITOR@TECHNION is now known as CERNEWS@TECHNION. Otherwise it functions the same as before. Thanks to Oren for that news, also. Bernhard Dolderer told me that NETRELAY@FRECP11 is now known simply as RELAY at that node. While he was at it he suggested that I correct the NETSERV file server header to reflect that they also act as name servers. Meanwhile, the Relay at CCNYVME is no longer operational. Scott Hennig passed on that piece of info. Point of contention... When I listed the electronic magazines I assumed that people would be intelligent enough to check whether the userid@node they can get back issues from is a file server or not. Apparently it is not so, with people receiving commands like SENDME FSFNET VOL4N01. I have now made it painfully clear whether you should send mail to someone to get back issues of a magazine. Until next week...
