Taped to the wall in some corner of my bedroom is a console listing of my first experience with BITNET, dated December 4th, 1984. It is less than a page (a summary of commands for the legendary and dufunct CHAT at Penn State) but it marks the foundation for BITLIB, the BITLIST, and perhaps my future. It has been a year of great strides for me (and the network) and I am looking foward to another one, and one after that, and one after that... Wouldn't it be nice to make a career out of this? Don't I wish it were possible. Maybe it is. Breaking the chains... A few days ago I was the lucky recipient of a chain letter. For those of you that don't know what it is or haven't seen one yet, it works like this: Somebody writes up a letter and sends it to four friends in BITNET, with instructions to type their names at the bottom and pass it on to four friends and so on. Eventually you get a lot of letters clogging up the network, as these things expand geometricly. Strictly speaking, it is a waste of resources and a load on the network. It certainly doesn't fall under the heading of "mature and responsible" use of BITNET. Next time you see a cahin letter either ignore it or write the person who sent it to you a note explaining why chain mail is wrong. Thank you. News... Just because some of us took a few days off to stuff our faces doesn't mean that the network stood still while we were gone. June Genis was kind enough to inform me about the database server QSPIRES@SLACVM. You can get started with it by sending it the HELPF command. Thanks to Anndrew Derbyshire and Jeff Kell for the news that RELAY@UTCVM is replacing UTCSERVE at the same node. I'm glad to see that no Relays died this week. Things were getting pretty morbid.
